UN Allocates Aid for Debris Removal in Philippines
United Nations, Nov 18 (Prensa Latina) The UN Development Programme allocated $5 million today to remove debris left by Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines that is hindering the delivery of humanitarian assistance.
According to a UNDP press release, the funds will help initial efforts to clean up and recover from the disaster caused 11 days ago by the devastating hurricane, "though much more is needed."
Road clearance is a key task to ensuring increased support from the international community for the Philippines, it said.
The UNDP urgently called for an additional $20 million to continue debris removal work, one of the first tasks covered by a UN plan launched a few days ago to help the Filipino peole recover from the impact of Typhoon Haiyan.
This initiative requires more than $300 million in its first six months of application, and the UN is systematic calling for financial support from every country.
