Volcano Found under Antarctic Ice
Washington, Nov 18 (Prensa Latina) A new volcano was located one kilometer beneath the Antarctic ice, Nature Geoscience website reported.
Scientists now believe that a large eruption could cause the ice sheet to melt faster than first thought and cause sea levels to rise.
"The volcano will create millions of gallons of water beneath the ice - many lakes full", underlined Doug Wiens, professor of earth and planetary science at Washington University in St Louis, United States.
"Most mountains in Antarctica are not volcanic, but most in this area are". "We did not expect to find something like this", said Wiens, one of the main researchers of the project.
