UN Describes as Remarkable Cuba's Work Against Cholera in Haiti
United Nations, Dec 5 (Prensa Latina) Cuban doctors have performed a remarkable job in combating the cholera epidemic in Haiti that has affected 680,000 people, the UN coordinator of the response to the outbreak, Pedro Medrano, acknowledged today.
The Chilean diplomat highlighted Cuba's efforts to assist Haiti, stricken with more than 8,000 cholera deaths cholera since Oct. 2010. The outbreak followed a devastating earthquake in January of that same year.
"There are over 700 people working closely with the Ministry of Health that have achieved really amazing results, given the conditions of the country," Medrano said in an interview with the UN News Centre.
Medrano made his statements on the first anniversary of an initiative launched by the United Nations for the Elimination of Cholera on the island of Hispaniola.
Medrano said that local authorities and organizations such as the International Red Cross and Doctors without Borders have also done outstanding anti-cholera work.
Along with cholera, other complex health situations have been addressed by Cuban doctors in Haiti, including major surgery, caesarean deliveries and vision loss, over the last 15 years.
According to official data, through this work, medical personnel have saved the lives of more than 314,000 Haitians.
