More than 500 New HIV/AIDS Cases in Bie Province, Angola
Luanda, Nov 13 (Prensa Latina) At least 572 new cases of HIV/AIDS were reported from last January to date in voluntary counseling and testing centers in Angolan province of Bie, said today health sources.
During that period, 34,994 people were examined and 50 percent of HIV positive cases were pregnant women, said Oscar Eduardo Bambi, provincial head of public health and control of endemic diseases department.
"That situation is a concern to health and management authorities, since many pregnant women with HIV/AIDS lack medical care in the territory, located at 600 kilometers from Luanda", said Bambi.
Bambi also said that Bie province has 48 hospitals and voluntary testing centers for HIV/AIDS.
He said that in order to reduce AIDS death toll, the program for the fight against AIDS includes seminars to make people aware of its tranmission and prevention.
About 130,000 Angolans were diagnosed with the virus, said last month Dulcelina Serrano, director of National Institute for the Fight against AIDS.
