Malaria Kills More Than 500 People in Angola Province
Luanda, Dec 12 (Prensa Latina) About 582 people were killed out of 46,750 malaria cases diagnosed from January to October in the Angolan province of Cuando Cubango, a situation that triggered alarm in the regional health system today.
In statements to the press, Mingi Wamba, provincial director of the program to fight the disease, acknowledged that health authorities are very concerned about this situation, particularly for the number of child deaths.
He explained that during that period, there was an increase compared to 2012, when about 32,441 malaria cases were reported and 377 people were killed.
This death toll rise is due to lack of health education in the communities that instead of having mosquito nets, insecticidal products to protect from mosquitoes, they use it in artisanal fishery activities, Wamba said.
He stated that other factors are the lack of at least one fumigation equipment to spray the breeding of mosquitoes in the region, some 825 kilometers southeast of Luanda.
A new drug for the treatment of this disease will be distributed in the Angolan health facilities in January, Francisco Telles, president of the National Program to Fight Malaria, said in November.
