Scientists Create a System to Predict Flu Outbreaks
Washington, Dec 5 (Prensa Latina) U.S. scientists said they have developed a system to predict weeks in advance when a city will see the peak of its seasonal flu outbreak, according to Columbia University.
The system combines data from Google Flu Trends, which tracks search inquiries for flu-related information on Google, with data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) on reports of lab-tested influenza cases.
Although researches say that 70 percent of the predictions are accurate, they stressed that growing interest in this service is leading more people to seek information about the flu without being infected, which complicates the analysis.
