Over 20,000 Evacuated in Indonesia by Volcano Eruption

Jakarta, Jan 4 (Prensa Latina) More than 20,000 people were evacuated from the vicinity of the Sinabung volcano, which has been active since late September and spewed lava above 4,000 feet of the mountain on Saturday, according to the Disaster Prevention Agency.

In September 2013, Indonesian authorities issued a high alert in the region, located on the island of Sumatra, and have made new shipments of settlers since the Sinabung eruption intensified in recent days, the sources said.

According to official media, there are 20,331 displaced due to this situation.

The Sinabung is one of the 129 active volcanoes in Indonesia, an archipelago located in the so-called Pacific Ring of Fire, which is considered the most tectonically active region in the world.
