Mexico Annually Loses 155,000 Hectares of Forest

Mexico City, Dec 28 (Prensa Latina) Mexico is the member of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development with the highest rate of decreasing forest cover, losing 155,000 hectares of forest annually.

According to the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources. that rate of declining forest area has been recorded since 2005, so the country ranks 21st among the world's nations with that problem.

In addition to harming biodiversity, the phenomenon affects the country's ability to use natural resources as well as environmental services that can be provided by ecosystems, a report said.

The loss of forests and jungles, estimated at 28.7 percent, has also meant an extra expense for the State, which has to bear the economic costs brought about by the depletion of forest resources, including indiscriminate deforestation and fires.

According to the National Institute of Statistics and Geography, as of 2011 the federal government has spent more than $1 million, or 0.1 percent of the GDP, to combat this situation.
