Ecuadorian Ambassador in Egypt Denounces Chevron Excesses
Cairo, Oct 24 (Prensa Latina) The ecological abuses committed by the oil trans-national Chevron in Ecuador were denounced here today by this country''s ambassador, Edwin Johnson.
The head of the Ecuadorian embassy explained the tactics of the multinational oil company Texaco,later acquired by Chevron, to compensate indigenous communities of the Amazon, demanding a payment of 19 billion dollars for environmental damage that will take centuries to reverse.
From the beginning of its works the U.S. multinational violated the section of the contract that established the use of environmental protection techniques, including re-injection of contaminated water and debris.
During the validity of the contract Texaco extracted from Ecuadorian underground 1.7 billion barrels of oil and poured into ancestral growing areas of indigenous population 18 billion liters of contaminated water, among other damages, specified the diplomat.
Recently, the images of Ecuadorian president Rafael Correa went all over the world, dipping hands in one of the hundreds of toxic deposits left by the company, which always failed to meet its contractual commitments in the layout of waste caused by their work.
The Ambassador reported that Chevron has spent hundreds of thousands of dollars on a smear campaign of propaganda to shirk its responsibility and not compensate with 19 billion dollars the members of the five indigenous communities of, which are the plaintiff, such as several courts have failed in the United States and Ecuador.
He also refuted the U.S. media campaign against President Correa, and stressed that the president has decided to listen to the demands of the people affected, in his capacity as head of state.
