Kiev, June 13 (Xinhua) -- Seven miners died and two others were missing following an explosion at a mine in eastern Ukraine, authorities said Friday.

The blast occurred Thursday night at the Grand Invest Mine in Donetsk region at a depth of 300 meters, trapping the nine miners underground, the State Service for Emergencies said in a statement.

Operations at the mine were suspended and rescuers were continuing their search for the two missing workers, it said.

Mine accidents happen frequently in Ukraine due to outdated equipment and gross violations of safety regulations in coal enterprises.

Official figures show 100 miners were killed and 3,047 injured across Ukraine last year.
