Swine Flu Death Toll in India Continues to Rise
New Delhi, Apr 2 (Prensa Latina) With the death of other 13 people infected with the H1N1 virus, the total swine flu death toll in India to date rose to 2,097, a record that threatens to grow in the coming days.
According to the Ministry of Health latest report, people who have got infected with the disease have also reached the unprecedented number of 34,351.
Most of the 29 states of India are under the threat of the swine flu outbreak, but the worst affected are the states of Gujarat (central and western) and Rajasthan, which together account for nearly 40 percent of the people who have contracted the deadly influenza.
Deaths in those territories amount to 434 and 423; respectively, or about 70 percent of the national total.
The situation in the states of Maharashtra (west) and Madhya Pradesh (center), with 422 and 305 deaths; respectively, is also worrying.
Less than 100 deaths have been reported in Karnataka (85), Telangana (77), Punjab and Haryana (53 each), Uttar Pradesh (38), West Bengal (26), Himachal Pradesh (23), Andhra Pradesh and Chhattisgarh (22 in both cases), Jammu and Kashmir (19), Kerala (14) and Uttarakhand (12).
In Delhi, the capital, the number of deaths has been contained to 12, but people who have been diagnosed with the virus reached a record figure of 4,245 cases.
Health officials fear that the national figures of deaths and infections are higher than the official because in India there are so remote places devoid of mass media that no reports of death and their causes are sent.
