WHO Calls for Vigilance against Possible Detection of Isolated Cases

United Nations, Jan 15 (Prensa Latina) The World Health Organization (WHO) warned today that isolated cases of Ebola may occur, which confirms the urgency to maintain strong vigilance in Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea, countries declared free of Ebola virus transmission.

"Today, the WHO declared the end of the epidemic in Liberia and noted that all known chains of transmission in West Africa were cut, but that does not mean the job has finished", warned the organization in a statement.

According to the United Nations agency, the coming months will be crucial to eradicate the outbreak, responsible of more than 28,500 cases and 11,300 deaths since December 2013, mainly in the three African states.

Liberia was the first to be declared free of Ebola in May 2015, but the virus returned twice since then, most recently in November, it informed.

The WHO believes the danger is still present, although if new infections occur, it would be in small magnitude compared to the problems faced during 2014.

Experts point out that Ebola stays in the body fluids of survivors, such as semen, where it could be for up to one year, with risk of spreading 'in a very unusual way' to people with intimate ties.
