Storm Left One Missing and Extensive Damage in France
Paris, Oct 28 (Prensa Latina) Christian, the first storm of the fall season, left one missing person, thousands of homes without electricity and heavy damage to infrastructure and transportation, according to a preliminary assessment issued today.
A woman in her 50s was washed away by a wave on the French island of Belle-Ile, in the Morbihan department, the prefecture reported today.
Ships the National Society for Sea Rescue and a chopper participate in the search and rescue efforts.
The storm battered the west and north regions of the country with winds up to 140 kph, knocking down trees and power lines and leaving about 75 thousand homes without electricity, most of them remain still without service.
Due to the strong winds and fierce waves all ferry services crossing the English Channel are suspended.
Cross-channel train service Eurostar, which connects France and the United Kingdom, is also suspended.
The storm, heading north now, caused two deaths in the United Kingdom and one in Amsterdam.
