UN: Devastating Scene of Typhoon Passage Through Philippines
United Nations, Nov 9 (Prensa Latina) The typhoon Haiyan left behind in Philippines absolute scene of devastation and damages rarely seen, reported today a UN Group for the Assessment and Coordination in Case of Disasters (UNDAC).
According to in situ report released here, the meteor- known in this locality as Yolanda- seriously hit the infrastructure of that country of the Southeast Asia on the eve.
The last time I saw a destruction on this scale was when the tsunami on the Indic Ocean, noted the head of UNDAC, Sebastian Rhodes, shortly after his arrival in Tacloban City, the most affected.
The UN team pointed out that the roads were impassable due to the rubbles and cars disseminated there, forcing the movement by helicopter. The rescue and aid operations will be extremely difficult, said Rhodes.
The UNDAC will work in coordination with the Philippine government to create conditions for humanitarian assistance from various agencies.
An estimate of the local Red Cross shows that Haiyan ( Yolanda ) could cause 1,200 deaths, 1,000 of them in Tacloban , coastal city at about 580 kilometers southeast of Manila.
Reports from Tacloban already stood at 100 the fatal victims, with most of the work of the rescue and search work still to be done.
