Honduras: New Outbreak of Zika, Dengue and Chikungunya is Expected

Tegucigalpa, Mar 16 (Prensa Latina) The Pan-American Health Organization raised the alert today on a new outbreak of diseases transmitted by the mosquito Aedes Aegypti (Zika, Dengue and Chikungunya) following the Holy Week.

"We need the effort of the Honduran families to whom we urge to join the prevention campaigns", said OPS representative in this country Ana Treasure, expressing her concern about a possible increase of the cases infected by those diseases in late March.

There are 15,732 cases of Zica in Honduras, as well as 5,596 cases of Dengue and 6,194 cases of Chikungunya.

In February, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared the Zica virus as a health emergency given its swift spread across Latin America since the previous year.

So far there is no vaccination to cure or treat the disease, which is linked to neurological conditions in new-born babies, hence WHO has given the same importance to this disease as to Ebola in 2014.
