Drought Affects 90 Percent of Venezuela

Caracas, Mar 17 (Prensa Latina) During the period 2013-2015, more than 90 percent of Venezuelan territory has presented a deficit in rainfall, the National Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology reported in a statement today.

The National Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology stated that in the northern coastal region of Venezuel, 50 percent less rainfall than average has been recorded, while in the southern part of the country close to 25 percent.

According to the report, the situation is exacerbated by El Niño. The weather phenomenon has also affected other countries in the region, such as Colombia and Peru, leading these governments to carry out action to preserve water reserves.

According to the institute, the situation is a result of imbalance in the atmosphere and oceans, due to the large amount of greenhouse gases which are causing climate change on the planet.

In Venezuela, the long drought and El Niño have generated low levels in water reservoirs and has also affected the generation of electricity. Increased forest fires and losses in agricultural, livestock and fish production in the country have also been reported.

The government is taking action to preserve vital stocks.
