More than 744,000 Affected by Natural Events in Guatemala in 2013
Guatemala, Dec 31 (Prensa Latina) At least 744,647 people were affected, while 17 lost their lives by natural phenomena recorded during 2013 in Guatemala, according to the National Coordinator for Disaster Reduction (Conred).
Rainfall, forest fires, volcanic eruptions and seismic events generated 1,317 incidents in Guatemalan territory, the government agency said in a bulletin.
According to the official sources, 13,297 people were evacuated and 1,401 had to be relocated to shelters this year.
Three people were reported missing in the rainy season, meanwhile 28 were injured as a result of disasters, one of them by the earthquake of last September 6, with 5.9 degrees on the Richter scale.
In addition, 6,451 homes were damaged, including 193 with severe damages or destroyed, according to the statement.
From January to June of this year , fire crews from Conred stifled fire forests generated in different geographical areas of this Central American nation.
Conred came in 1996 by legislative decree as the entity responsible for preventing, mitigating, attend and participate in the rehabilitation and reconstruction of the evils caused by disasters.
