Nearly 21,000 Earthquakes Registered in Canary Islands since 2011
Madrid, Dec 29 (Prensa Latina) The Canary Islands have registered 20,976 earthquakes from July 2011 to December 28, 2013, the National Geographic Institute reported after a 5.1-magnitude seism in Richter''s scale in that Spanish autonomous community.
Saturday's earthquake, the strongest seism registered in the Canary Islands this century, was located 15 kilometers west of El Hierro island and 11 kilometers deep.
According to the National Geographic Institute, there is no evidence linking Saturday's 5.1-magnitude earthquake to a new process of magma intrusion in the area where active reactivation was reported in March.
Recently, the Volcanology Institute of the Canary Islands reported that El Hiero had risen 5.7 centimeters, coinciding with an increase in seismic activity on the island, although most movements are imperceptible to people.
