Russian City Celebrates the End of Polar Night
Moscow, Jan 11 (Prensa Latina) The long polar night in Russia''s northern port of Murmansk, which lasts forty consecutive days, came to an end today.
The Regional Meteorological Service confirmed this Saturday the sun rose at 12:30 (Moscow time) before setting 20 minutes later.
This phenomenon will continue with a daily 20 minutes increase starting Sunday until mid-May, when the so-called polar day starts.
During that time, the sun never disappears behind the horizon and night will not fall until approximately July 22, the source added.
Locals celebrated the "First Dawn" with a traditional gathering on "Sunny Hill" in the south of the city, where they basked in the first rays of the new year.
