St. Lucia to Get Support for Suriname for Heavy Rains Victims
Castries, Jan 9 (Prensa Latina) The Government of Saint Lucia announced today that Suriname will send economic assistance to face the effects of heavy rain that hit the country at the end of the year, killing six people and leaving heavy damages.
In a diplomatic note, the Foreign Ministry of Suriname said that it will donate money to this island trough the Eastern Caribbean Central Bank, to be allocated to reconstruct damaged houses and infrastructure.
The Government of Suriname also said it was sending 10 containers with water and other supplies for worst-hit communities.
In late December, 2013, the Eastern Caribbean islands of Dominica, Saint Lucia and Saint Vincent and the Grenadines were hit by heavy rains with landslides and floods, killing 22 people.
Meanwhile, Guyana approved donations of 100,000 USD each to Saint Lucia and Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, as well as 75,000 USD to Dominica.
The Secretary General of the Organization of American States, Jose Miguel Insulza, urged other agencies within the Inter-American system to mobilize for a hemispheric response to this environmental disaster.
