Climate Change, Urban Development Focus Geographer's Event in Cuba

Havana, Apr 8 (Prensa Latina) Mitigation of climate change and urbanistic order are the main focus today of the third day of the 15th Meeting of Latin American Geographers, running in Cuba until Friday, April 10.

Four of the five keynote speeches scheduled for today at the Havana's Conference Center will offer views from countries of such problems faced by humanity.

Puerto Rican Jose Seguinot will speak on "Concepts and paradigms of medical geography used in developing an adaptation and mitigation plan to climate change in the Caribbean cities."

Carlos Amaya, John Montoya and Luisa Iñiguez will simultaneously offer impressions from Venezuela, Colombia and Cuba, respectively, on territorial order.

Globalization, integration and territorial dynamics, rural areas, agriculture and food security, and environmental issues, climate change and risk management are among the issues convened for the forum, in which theoretical sessions will be held until tomorrow.

Cartography and geographic information technologies, tourism and heritage, and population, gender and identity are also included in more than 4,000 papers and posters of the scientific program.

About 2,000 geographers, biologists, geologists, economists, sociologists and architects from 30 countries of the region and Russia, Spain, Portugal, Germany and Canada are attending the meeting.

Scientific excursions and the delivery of the Milton Santos prize, honoring the Brazilian geographer who died in 2001, are expected for Friday, April 10. The venue for the next 2017 edition in a southern hemisphere country will be also elected.
