Peruvian Capital Suffers Alarming Environmental Pollution
Lima, Dec 18 (Prensa Latina) Environmental pollution in the Peruvian capital grows at an alarming rate and one of its factors, sulfur dioxide, increased almost five times in the recent three years, according to an official specialized report.
The report of the National Service of Meteorology and Hydrology of Peru (SENAMHI) states that in September 2010 the air breathed the people of Lima had 3.7 micrograms of sulfur dioxide per cubic meter.
That content, generated by trucks and buses that use poor quality oil as fuel, increased last November to 21.2 micrograms above the limit of 20 set by the World Health Organization (WHO).
According to the report, nearly a half million motor vehicles circulate Lima, with an average of 14 years old.
The air breathed by Lima citizens particles also contains ammonia, sulfates, carbon and dust caused by construction sites and industries.
