Nearly 15 Million Affected by Typhoon Haiyan in Philippines
United Nations, Dec 3 (Prensa Latina) More than 14.9 million people were affected in the Philippines by the passage of Typhoon Haiyan, with many still in need of food and shelter, according to the daily United Natios update on the impact of the hurricane.
In its report on the situation caused by Haiyan 25 days ago, the U.N. Coordinated Office of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) says that some four million people were displaced from their homes, 204,000 of whom were settled in evacuation centers.
Food, access to shelter, property recovery and the restoration of basic services remain priorities in the areas hit by the typhoon, known locally as Yolanda, the report said.
According to the body, in areas far from the Visayas Islands and Eastern and Western areas, there are food shortages due to "logistical challenges."
OCHA also urged support for small farmers engaged in crop cultivation, with a farming season that ends in January and is a key element in the survival of the country, hit November 8 by Haiyan, with winds exceeding 300 kilometers an hour.
In relation to casualties, OCHA´s report reflects that Philippine authorities registered more than 5,600 dead, 26,200 wounded and 1,760 missing.
