U.S.A. and Canada Facing Coldest Day in Two Decades

Washington, Jan 7 (Prensa Latina) The United States and Canada will experience their coldest day in two decades today with thermometers reaching nearly 60 degrees below zero Fahrenheit, as a result of a polar vortex that has left at least three people dead in the last few hours.

According to The Weather Channel, the front will move Tuesday through the U.S. Midwest and Northeast with a maximum of at least minus sixteen degrees, increasing the risk of hypothermia because the skin can freeze within minutes.

The freezing weather will be accompanied by intense blizzards and heavy snowfall.

U.S. officials confirmed the deaths of a one year old child, and two people in the Midwest due to storm-related incidents.

With these deaths, a total of 19 fatalities have been reported in less than a week in the U.S. and Canada due to extreme cold.

Flightstats.com reported that more than 5,000 commercial flights remain canceled and another 10,000 have been delayed.

Last night the Amtrak rail company halted three passenger trains enroute to Chicago due to the high winds and snowfall, and moved more than 500 passengers to buses in order to reach their destinations.

New York and Illinois declared a state of emergency, closed schools and ordered certain roads closed due to dangerous driving conditions.

Cities such as Indianapolis and Chicago took similar measures and also opened heated centers for city residents in need.

Medical authorities and the media are urging people to take shelter from the storm, avoid going out into the streets and to wrap up properly inside and outside their homes.

The polar wave also threatens Canada in the provinces of Ontario and Newfoundland, with winter storm warnings for extreme cold and intense blizzards.

The Pearson international airport in Toronto canceled 280 flights due to the terrible weather conditions, while Toronto's mayor suspended classes and public transportation.

Newfoundland reported thousands of citizens still without electricity since last Friday.
