HIV/AIDS Infection in Cuba Is Stable

Havana, Aug 15 (Prensa Latina) HIV infection in Cuba is stable regarding the number of cases reported in the last three years, an expert said.

Dr. Jorge Perez Avila, director of the "Pedro Kouri" Institute of Tropical Medicine (IPK) in Havana, told Prensa Latina that however, educational strategies, information and prevention in the population should maintain. In addition, a healthy and responsible sexual behavior is needed to avoid the transmission of the disease, he said.

Perez Avila stated that a broad spectrum of patients are currently receiving antiretroviral therapy in the country, and new lines of treatment, more efficient and fewer adverse effects are looking for, drugs are modernizing and those with greater toxicity are eliminating, even when the nation is not immune to financial problems afflicting the world today.

About the current state of the vaccines, Perez Avila explained that Cuban researchers are working in that field, in which a set of scientific institutions is inserted, and where modest progresses can be seen.
