Meeting on Climate Change Opened With Disaster in Philippines

Warsaw, Nov 11 (Prensa Latina) United Nations meeting on climatic change (COP19) began today in Warsaw marked by the tragedy that Philippine people suffers, affected by a super typhoon that has left at least 10,000 fatalities.

At the meeting, Abdullah Bin Hamad, president of previous high-level meeting (COP18), highlighted the great opportunity that this meeting represents in order to give "a definitive step" towards a global agreement on reduction of emissions during Paris Meeting in 2015.

Yeb San, Philippine Commissioner for Climate, urged developed countries to commit to financing measures to fight climatic change and support countries affected by natural disasters.

"Philippines is the second most affected country by climatic change with 22 typhoons average in a year, something that is unbearable and causes constant damages that are impossible to cover", said San.

For Christiana Figueres, general secretary of United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, human race is experiencing the effects of global warming.

Humans beings are for first time "breathing air with carbon dioxide levels above 400 ppm (particles per million)", said Figueres.

Figueres also said that reduction of pollutant gases has "no winners or losers, but winners only, especially society".

First six days of the meeting, which will run until November 22nd, will deal with working sessions while in the second week senior representatives of country members will take part of the meeting.

However, few people expect any important agreement is reached before Paris 2015 meeting.
