Zika Virus Found in Old Blood Sample in Bangladesh

Dhaka, Mar 16 (Prensa Latina) Health authorities in Bangladesh detected the presence of Zika virus in an old blood sample, today revealed sector sources.

Officials said to Bdnews24 news website that after the World Health Organizationâ?Ös emergency call issued in early February, they decided to test blood samples stored at the Institute of Epidemiology, Disease Control and Research.

Those samples had earlier tested negative for dengue and chikungunya, the two prevalent diseases in Bangladesh, caused by the Aedes Aegypti mosquito.

Given the situation, a health team from Dhaka was deployed in the area where the blood sample was found to collect information, a practice known as "contact tracing", said Bdnews24.

Institute scientists and health ministry officials refused to comment on the issue because the government will be officially in charge of it in the coming days, it added.

Zika virus was first discovered in Uganda in 1947. The most common symptoms are fever, rash, joint pain and conjunctivitis.
