UN Reiterates Call for World Support to the Philippines
United Nations, Nov 14 (Prensa Latina) The United Nations reiterated today its call to the international community to give substantial, collective support to the Philippines for the more than 11.50 million victims of Typhoon Haiyan.
In a press release, UN Deputy Secretary General Valerie Amos made a call from Manila, as part of actions in the Philippines in the wake of destruction and death left by the typhoon.
Amos, who also coordinates the emergency relief, toured yesterday the city of Tacloban, one of the worst hit by Haiyan, locally known as Yolanda.
"I saw a totally devastated city," with tens of thousands of people living in the open air or in improvised shelters among the rubble, exposed to the rain and the wind; our priority now is to increase efforts to assist them," said Amos after her visit.
Early this week, the UN demanded 300 million USD from the international community and donor countries to be used in the first six months of a plan to support and meet the needs of the victims in the Philippines.
