China Builds its Fourth Station in Antartica

Beijing, Dec 19 (Prensa Latina) China increases its precense in the south pole with the construction of a summer camp in Taishan, which becomes its fourth base in Antarctica to research and study of this southern territory.

Qu Tanzhou, director of China Oceanic Administration in the Arctic and Antarctica, said the construction of the camp in Taishan will ensure these studies safety and the research will be extended to higher rank.

China, which has sent 30 missions to Antarctica since 1984, seeks answers there on climate change, an issue of global concern.

Taishan camp, located between the Zhongshan and Kulun, will provide logistical support and December will be used to frame and provide the basis for geological, glacial, geomagnetism and atmospheric sciences.

The construction of this new center, that will require about 40 days, is located in the so-called land Princess Elizabeth, 2,521 meters above sea levcel, and will support scientific research of the Kunlun station, which is more 4,000 meters above sea level.

In addition to the stations Zhongshan and Kunlun, China also has in Antartica the so-called Great Wall.
