Port of Spain, July 14 (Prensa Latina) Health authorities confirmed here today three cases of nationals infected with Chikungunya, transmitted by mosquitoes.
According to the Health Minister, Fuad Khan, the Caribbean Public Health Agency, was responsible for such a claim.
"The Ministry of Health is already in contact with these patients to ensure they receive the appropriate clinical care. Through our Division of Vector Control, we have begun the work to minimize the spread of mosquitoes with the implementation of strategies", said the Minister.
Upon learning this news, Trinidad and Tobago became the last member of the Caribbean Community (Caricom) to register cases of Chikungunya, after the disease was first detected in the region last December.
That virus, that is transmitted to people through the bite of mosquitoes carrying Aedes aegyti and Aedes albopictus, causes a disease with an accute febrile phase that lasts from two to five days, followed by a period of pain in the joints of the extremities.
There is no vaccine or specific treatment for this viral disease, new in the region.
Health officials warn of the need to exercise caution and avoid areas of water storage that could favor the growth of mosquitoes.
