Chernobyl, CUBAN HUMANITARIAN PROGRAM



"Deep gratitude in Ukraine for the Cuban solidarity position",

The Ukrainian government appreciated the Cuban solidarity gesture of providing specialized medical care to almost 13 000 children affected by the nuclear plant accident in Chernobyl, five years after the starting of this humanitarian action.

Some 150 representatives of the presidency, ministry of foreign affairs, politicians, scientists, parents and children cared for in the island expressed their deep gratitude by this unprecedented support to the Cuban ambassador Sergio López Briel. They thanked President Fidel Castro and the people of Cuba for their decisive contribution to the treatment and improvement of health state of thousands of children and adults affected by the atomic catastrophe that took place in April 1986.
In a ceremony held in the Cuban embassy in Kiev, the guests condemned the unfair US economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed on Cuba and the Association of Ukrainian Mothers claimed for “the end of this inhuman measure taken by Washington”.

Likewise, officials from the administration of President Leonid Kuchma expressed their best wishes for the future development of the Ukrainian-Cuban relationships.

THE PROGRAM WILL CONTINUE IN PRACTICE.

Five years after the starting, the Cuban Comprehensive Program of Care to Chernobyl children made it possible to assist 13 000 children and 2000 adults, according to an statement made at a press conference by the program coordinator Dr Carlos Dotres, who is the present director of “William Soler” pediatric hospital.

The activities to celebrate the fifth anniversary of this program were carried out in “José Martí “international pioneer camp where the solidarity actions of our people with the victims of one of the worst catastrophes ever occurred in the present century have been put into practice. As part of these groups of celebration activities, there was a scientific event with the participation of health professionals working in the program, a cultural sports meeting and a press conference with national and foreign journalists.

Dotres stated the political willingness of continuing this program adjusted to the present situation.

Together with the general coordinator of the program, there were present Olexander Taranenko, Ukrainian ambassador as well as other diplomats from the Russian embassy and Cuban authorities.

The Ukrainian ambassador expressed the gratitude to the Cuban party for the solidarity extended and told the participants that during the days of the catastrophe, a group of Cuban students went to a hospital to give blood donations to the first victims.
