Chernobyl, CUBAN HUMANITARIAN PROGRAM

"To feel love",

by Elson Concepción Pérez, Gramma newspaper, page 4, April 22nd 1995.

One of the most humanitarian tasks was evaluated in its fifth anniversary: the care of children and adults affected by Chernobyl accident in Cuba.

There were present Cuban health, education and other sectors workers who directly or indirectly have had to do with the medical and rehabilitation treatment of more than 14 000 victims of the Ukrainian nuclear plant accident.

This time, Tarará welcomed Raisa Bogatrova, vice-minister of health of Ukraine, who came to tell us that “Cuba was and continues to be the first country worldwide that has given assistance to our affected children. You have been mothers and fathers for our children. You have given them hope of living longer.

“On behalf of the Ukrainian government and people, I would like to express our deepest gratitude”.  On the other hand, Olexander Pozhko, president of the Young Foundation in Chernobyl explained that there was a possible agreement with the Ministry of Health of Cuba regarding the creation of a center similar to Tarará in a non-infected area of Ukraine in order to follow up the treatment using Cuban drugs and medical cooperation. Rogelio Acevedo, president of the Institute of Civil Aviation in Cuba said to the participants that our country was just paying a debt of human gratitude since in other occasions, the Russian and Ukrainian people had unselfishly helped Cuba and today, under the new conditions, we keep this line of cooperation and strengthening of relationships.

Also Dr Carlos Dotres and Ukrainian ambassador Olexander S. Taranienko took the floor. Dotres concluded: our cooperation will last forever
