Chernobyl, CUBAN HUMANITARIAN PROGRAM
|
"Over 15 000 witnesses to solidarity", by José A de la Osa, Gramma newspaper, page 2, March 23rd 2000. There are more than 700 children diagnosed with benign and malignant oncohematological diseases, who have undergone seven bone marrow transplantations and 150 orthopedic surgeries. Also, there have been performed 18 cardiovascular surgeries- most of them due to congenital malformations- , and two renal transplants whereas around 100 patients suffering neurological diseases have been seen. Medical assistance covers dental care, psychological care and rehabilitation in line with the Comprehensive Health Program designed by the Cuban experts for the care of Chernobyl children. Some hundreds of children and also accompanying adults have benefited from the vitiligo, alopecia and psoriasis therapies that are applied in Tarara under the advice of the Center of Placental Histotherapy in the City of Havana. In the Ukrainian spa located in Eupaforia, Cuban physicians advice the treatment of these children “at home”. The World Health Organization has publicly acknowledged the efforts of Cuba “to face together with other peoples the cruel realities of the catastrophes that periodically occur and affect mankind.” On the occasion of the 10th anniversary, Tarara will hold a scientific event and will implement a recreational and cultural program until 29th. On March 29th 1990, an IL-62 airplane landed in “José Martí” international airport to bring 139 children from the Ukrainian city of Chernobyl located some 20 km from the nuclear energy plant in which one of the reactors had been damaged. They came to receive medical assistance in our country. The words expressed by a Ukrainian mother when Fidel went to the airport to welcome them would pay homage to the great Cuban Revolution solidarity: “Such a small country with such a great heart!” she said. Ten years afterwards, 15 868 children from Ukraine, Belarus and Russia have been cared for in José Martí Piooner´s city, then turned into a giant assistance center , with the support of more than 15 high scientific level institutions. In the first stage after the accident, roughly 1 700 patients annually travelled to Cuba, but in the last few years, the number is 250 approximately, mainly from Ukraine. |
