"Definitive shutdown of Chernobyl plant in December announced", EFE, June 6th 2000, Gramma newspaper, page 8. …President of Ukraine Leonid Kuchma announced the definitive shutdown of the atomic power plant in Chernobyl on next December 15th. This was the scenario of one of the worst catastrophes ever occurred in the civil nuclear industry in 1986. According to EFE, Kuchma made this statement after a meeting with the US president William Clinton, with whom he discussed the details of the assistance of the United States of America and other Western countries. Ukraine had requested financial support to shut down Chernobyl plant as a way of compensating the energy requirements of the country. Kiev asked for urgent financial assistance to raise a second “coffin” on top of the first one with which the fourth reactor had been covered, which had exploded on April 1986.
