Chernobyl, CUBAN HUMANITARIAN PROGRAM

"Strong links of friendship between Associations of Combatants of Cuba and Ukraine"

by Rassi Reynold, Gramma newspaper, page 2,  July 13th, 2001.

“The working experience of the Association of Combatants of the Cuban Revolution is very important and useful for our organization, so we consider that you are an example of patriotic/military education of the new generations and of those who are at present faithful defenders of the homeland in our society” expressed  Col (r )Oleg Kalashnikov, of the Ukrainian Armed Forces and president of the Union of Combatants of that country, who leads a delegation from that organization  that pays a visit to Cuba in response of an invitation from the National Leadership of the Association of Combatants of the Cuban Revolution.

This is the second visit of Kalashnikov to our country. His former visit was in 1999. The delegation visited Lenin Park and also Tarará where they talked to the children affected by the Chernobyl nuclear catastrophe, who are under medical treatment in our country, and also to the staff taking care of them there.

“Our organization is very young, it will celebrate its 4th anniversary next December and is composed of some 19 000 members and 127 staffs in companies and workplaces. The backbone of our structure lies in the active members of the Armed Forces, their relatives and a large group of veterans of the Great Liberation War of the Soviet Union against German . We studied the experience of the Association of Combatants of the Cuban Revolution, the positive results of its work, the solution given to social problems and we think that all this may be very useful for our organization and future development.”

Finally, Oleg Kalashnikov thanked Cuba and particularly the Commander in Chief Fidel Castro for the free care given to Chernobyl children, thus saving the lives of many of them and showing all those things that Socialism can do and that no other country has made so far.
