Chernobyl, CUBAN HUMANITARIAN PROGRAM
|
Cuban research conducted in children from Chernobyl is very useful. by Alberto Nuñez Betancourt, Granma, page 2, November 18, 1995. The Cuban research conducted in children from the areas affected by the Chernobyl accident are very useful for the international scientific community because in the first place it provides the only sound and reliable database to continue the studies. The above-mentioned was stated by Argentinean expert Abel González, assistant director of Safety in the International Atomic Energy Organization, on the conclusion of a seminar about the Cuban radiation dosimetry studies and the impact on the health of some children from Ukraine, Russia and Belarus. This expert praised the Cuban contribution that in addition to the solidarity gesture of receiving 13 192 children from Chernobyl to provide them with comprehensive medical care, it conducted a serious research study that may be improved; however it already offers valid criteria which prove that many health problems suffered by the children were not caused by the Chernobyl disaster. The International Atomic Energy Organization experts evaluated the Cuban research during this week, made technical recommendations and suggested that the research efforts of the Cuban specialists should proceed with the material support of the international body. The director of the Center of Radiation Protection and Hygiene Luis Iova, on behalf of the Cuban researchers who worked for this project, thanked the suggestions and committed himself to take them into account to include them in their work as soon as possible. |
