by Elson Concepción Pérez, Gramma newspaper, page 8, May 29th 1996.

Dimitri Tabachnik, head of the Administration of the president of Ukraine considered that his meeting with the Cuban president Fidel Castro had been very fruitful.

The important Ukrainian leader, whose one-week visit will finish this Wednesday, pointed out: “We spoke with president Fidel Castro about many aspects related with the cooperation prospects”.

“I was really impressed by the vast knowledge of Fidel about my country, our production of grains and wheat and other things” . He also explained that he had given Commander in Chief a personal message from the Ukrainian president Lednid Kuchma. A Ukrainian delegation source said to this journalist that the future visit of President Kuchma to Cuba was foreseen to take place next October.  Tabachnik stated that Ukraine had a lot of industrial possibilities that would allow it to set cooperation with Cuba in this area, and that Cuba  had several medical and biotechnological products as well as tourist conditions and resorts and others that were very interesting for his country.

Regarding the medical assistance to the Chernobyl children, he pointed out: “Cuba is the only country worldwide that has developed a comprehensive complete program for the care of these children”. “Without the unselfish support of Cuba, my country would have not been able to take care of more than 13 000 children and relatives who had been already cured in Cuba”. He added: “I visited them yesterday in Tarará. It was exciting to see these children dance, sing and play. They are really very happy here”.

The Ukrainian delegation also had meetings with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Roberto Robaina and with the Minister of Foreign Trade Ricardo Cabrisas as well as José Miyar Barrueco, secretary of the Council of State.

Carlos Lage, secretary of the Executive Committee of the Council of Ministers and other Ukrainian and Cuban officials were also present in this meeting.
