Chernobyl, CUBAN HUMANITARIAN PROGRAM

Care of the children from Chernobyl in Cuba assessed as exemplary,

by José De la Osa, Gramma newspaper, page 8, April 13th 1999.

Coming from Ukraine, the second largest country in Europe after Russia, Ministry of Public Health Dr Raysa V. Bogatyriova arrived in Havana and assessed the Cuban Comprehensive Care Program for Chernobyl children that started 9 years ago as “a model, an example of the relationships between our peoples and states” and she also stressed “the love and tenderness that surround these children”. As it is known, over 15 000 children from the areas affected by the nuclear energy plant accident in 1986 have been treated in our country.

After a meeting with her counterpart Dr Carlos Dotres, Dr Bogatyriova, specialist in Gynecology and Obstetrics, expressed the interest of developing closer relations of scientific and commercial exchange in the fields of family medicine, biotechnology, and drug industry.

She was particularly interested in the immediate acquisition of the Cuban recombinant vaccine against hepatitis B, which is a health problem in many countries today. She mentioned that the Ministry of Health of Ukraine is aimed at intensifying the promotion and prevention work to reduce mortality rates (frequency) of intestinal diseases such as cholera, hepatitis A, B and C as well as non-communicable diseases like cardiovascular and oncological illnesses. With a population of 50 million pop and an infant mortality of 14,2 per 1000 live births, Dr Bogatyriova pointed out that the health authorities in her country is giving special priority to mother and child care-linked programs.

In addressing Minister Dotres, she commented: “I think that we may have cooperation in maternal-infant programs; firstly in the exchange of information, preparation of specialists, gynecobstetricians, neonatologists, and others, taking into account the successes of Cuba in the care of the mother and the child”.  Regarding AIDS, she stated that there has been a rise of this disease in comparison with other European countries, mainly due to drug abuse. During her stay in Cuba, the Ukraine Minister of Health visited some research and health centers.
