Important momentum for the relationships between Ukraine and Cuba,

by Concepcion Pérez Elson, Gramma newspaper, page 8, August 21st, 2006.

Ukrainian ambassador Olexander Taranenko announced the forthcoming visit of President Leonid Kuchma to Cuba.

The long history of the friendly relationships between Ukraine and Cuba has now a legal support that is expressed in 14 agreements signed in the last few years and other seven to be approved, said ambassador Olexander Taranenko in his statements to Gramma newspaper, for the celebration of the fifth anniversary of the Ukrainian National Day on August 24th.

“These relationships will reach their peak at the end of the present year when it is foreseen that President Leonid Kuchma will pay a visit to Cuba.”

In a recent message sent to President Fidel Castro on the occasion of his 80th birthday, the Ukrainian President stated: “Awaiting for our next meeting in Havana, I wish you once again every success in your highest mission for the welfare of the Cuban state and people to which I would like to convey my best wishes of peace, harmony, prosperity and happiness on behalf of the Ukrainian people.

Ambassador Taranenko reported that the 2nd session of the Intergovernmental Commission will be held in Havana soon.  Regarding the care given to the children affected by the Chernobyl nuclear plant accident (more than 15 000 children), he said that this is the most sensitive field of co-operation in which Cuba is the only country that has a state-run complete program for the care of these children, unlike other highly developed countries that at most invite 20 or 30 children and take them on vacation for two weeks.

He pointed out that by a presidential decree, a medical and recreational center has been just built in Crimea for the care of many affected children.  Because of their professional level and experience, Cuban physicians will work there too. In relation to his country, he considered the recently passed Constitution as a very important event “which mirrors a new historical stage where the national economy has received a legal support for its development, thus showing the political willingness and the commitment of pursuing the path as a sovereign state”. He said that Ukraine had concluded the process of transportation and taking all nuclear strategic weapons out of its territory “as a contribution to free mankind from the threat of nuclear extermination”.
