Quotations from the speeches of the leader of the Cuban Revolution, Fidel Castro Ruz:

Regarding Chernobyl, this great tragedy, I want you to know that in our country, it has been treated 13 000 children for free, our country, Cuba alone has served more children from Chernobyl than all other countries of the world together (Applause). That has been a policy, an ethics.

I Also recalled that when Chernobyl accident thousands and tens of thousands of children were affected, and that Cuba has assisted, free of charge, to 13 000 children of Chernobyl (Applause). Cuba alone, in the middle blockade and when USSR and the socialist field disappeared, Cuba has assisted more children from Chernobyl that all other countries together.

Right now, when I was told you were coming and that it was intended to take you see the facilities of the Pan American, I said: "If you travel a little more you can visit the center where Chernobyl children are assisted." We do not make propaganda out of that, but we alone have assisted much more children from Chernobyl than the rest of the world together (Applause). Ten thousand children victims of Chernobyl have been in Cuba!! If you tally of how many have been received in the rest of the world I doubt that reaches 1 000, I am sure they do not go over 2 000, and in many cases were not medical assistance, some were in a holiday camp, not medical care, the scrutiny made to them in Cuba and assistance for any disease. Not all are serious or very serious, but it detects anything, we helps to detoxify the body from radiation, and the results have been really excellent. I wanted you to go were there, considering the noble, generous gesture that you do for us, we liked you to see how us at the same time, and even in the special period, we have suspended this collaboration with the children of Chernobyl. The USSR and the socialist field disappeared for some time now and were assisting the Chernobyl children, despite the embargo and despite the special period we are going through, as a matter of ethics, as a matter of morality, because it would have been easy to justify and say that not send a kid more. Now many times they send them, even when they are not matters of radiation, but skin conditions, conditions of leukemia, in cases that have nothing to do with radiation. There is a hospital here that is available to these children from a union of republics that disappeared. So we not only have been in solidarity with the Third World, but even to countries that had a higher level of development as the Soviet Union.

It was also stated that we have treated almost 15 000 children victims of Chernobyl disaster. Well, Cuba alone has assisted more children from Chernobyl than all other countries of the world. The media in North America do not speak about that. Nearly fifteen thousand kids! We have also gained some experience in that.
