Chernobyl, CUBAN HUMANITARIAN PROGRAM
|
Background Chernobil: Northern city in Ukraine located 130 km north of Kiev and 20 km from the An experiment whose supervision was incorrect (the water cooling system shut off) caused an uncontrollable reaction that in turn caused an expulsion of steam. The layer protecting the reactor was destroyed and approximately 100 million radioactive nucleidos curios were liberated to the atmosphere. Part of the radiation was extended through northern Europe and it arrived to Great Britain. The data offered by the authorities in the moment indicated that 31 people died as a result of the accident, but the number of deaths caused by the radiation is still ignored. More than 100.000 Ukrainian citizens were evacuated from areas around the location of the reactor, and Chernobil and other near regions remained uninhabited during one year after the accident. The officials responsible for this reactor were processed in 1987. The three remaining reactors of the power station entered back in operation this same year; later on, the area of disaster immediate evacuation was declared national park with the purpose of avoiding the population to return. In 1991 the government promised the closing of the whole Chernobil power station, but the energy demand retarded its closing. By the middle of 1994, the western states, alarmed by the lack of security of the power station, took a series of measures to assure its closing which took place on December 15th, 2000. |
